Renting a Dress

Everything you need to know about finding, renting, and wearing your dream dress.

How does renting a dress work?

Browse our collection of verified dresses, choose your wedding date and pay a deposit through PayFast to request the booking. The owner confirms within 48 hours (or your deposit is refunded). Pay the balance before delivery, and the dress is couriered to you or ready for collection at a fitting hub a couple of days before your wedding. Return it the day after your event using the prepaid return pack.

How long can I rent a dress for?

The standard rental period is four days: the dress arrives two days before your wedding and is returned the day after. Need longer for photos or a second ceremony? Message the owner — many are happy to extend.

What if the dress doesn't fit?

Check the dress measurements against your own — every listing includes bust, waist and hip measurements, and our filters match dresses to your size. We strongly recommend a try-on at a fitting hub first. Minor, reversible alterations (like temporary hemming) can be agreed with the owner in writing.

Can I try the dress on before booking?

Yes. Many dresses are available to try on at one of our partner fitting hubs. Choose “Try On” on the dress page, pick a time and the dress will be waiting for you with a stylist.

Listing a Dress

Learn how to list your dress and start earning.

How do I list my dress?

Create a free account, then follow our three-step listing: add your dress details and photos, upload proof of purchase and set your pricing, then review and publish. Our team verifies your listing, usually within 24 hours.

How much does it cost to list?

Listing is free. When your dress earns, we keep a 20% service fee on rentals and 15% on sales. That covers payment processing, verification, support and booking protection.

Can I rent my dress and still sell it?

Yes — choose “Rent Until Sold”. Your dress earns rental income while it stays available for a bride who wants to keep it forever.

Can a photographer take my listing photos?

Yes. Book an independent Runaway Dress photographer from your dashboard. They visit you, shoot studio-quality photos and complete an on-site authenticity and condition check, which speeds up verification.

Fitting Hubs

Find out about our fitting hub locations and in-person try-ons.

What is a fitting hub?

Fitting hubs are trusted partner boutiques where dresses are stored, inspected and tried on. You can book a private appointment with a stylist, and owners can drop off or collect their dresses there.

Where are your fitting hubs?

We have partners in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha, with more cities coming soon. See the full list on our Fitting Hubs page.

Is there a charge for a fitting?

Fittings are free unless stated on the booking page. You’re under no obligation to book after trying on.

Payments & Deposits

Information about pricing, deposits, and payouts.

How do payments work?

All payments are processed securely by PayFast — card, Instant EFT and other South African payment methods. Runaway Dress never sees or stores your card details.

How much is the deposit?

You pay a 30% deposit to secure your date. The balance, plus a refundable security deposit, is due 14 days before delivery. If your wedding is sooner than that, you pay in full when you book.

When do sellers get paid?

Once the dress is returned and checked (or the sale is completed), your earnings are paid by EFT to the bank account in your dashboard — usually within 3–5 working days.

What happens if the owner declines my booking?

Your deposit is refunded in full and we’ll help you find a similar dress.

Cleaning & Returns

How cleaning, care, and returns work for rented dresses.

Do I need to clean the dress before returning it?

No. Professional cleaning is included between every rental. Simply remove personal items and pack the dress in the return bag provided.

What if the dress is damaged?

Accidents happen. With damage protection, small stains and minor tears are covered. Larger damage is assessed by our team and may be deducted from your refundable security deposit, always with photos and a clear explanation.

What if I return the dress late?

Please return by the date in your dashboard — late returns can affect the next bride. Late fees may be deducted from your security deposit as set out in our Terms.

Safety & Verification

How we keep our community safe and dresses authentic.

How do you verify dresses?

Every listing is reviewed by our team: proof of purchase, designer label photos, condition photos and measurements. Many dresses are also inspected in person at a fitting hub or by one of our photographers.

How do you verify members?

Every member verifies their mobile number by SMS and their identity with a South African ID or passport and a selfie before booking or listing. Documents are encrypted and never shown to other members.

Why can’t I share my phone number in messages?

To protect you, contact details are hidden until a booking is confirmed. Keeping payments on Runaway Dress means your money and the dress are protected.
